3 of the world’s biggest stars are Canadian, and 2 of them are from Toronto!
Stratford isn’t that far down the 401, plus Bieber is also a Leafs fan, so he can get some “Toronto Artist” love here too! Since we celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday on Saturday, let’s show these guys some love and go back to their humble beginnings!
Drake, The Weeknd & Justin Bieber are 3 of the biggest musical acts in the world today but, what was the first song that put them on the map…
Let’s start with Drake! Back in 2007 Drizzy dropped a mixtape called, “Comeback Season,” which included a song called “Replacement Girl” and featured Trey Songz. I remember seeing this video and saying to myself, “who is this random Drake guy Trey Songz is doing a song with?” LOL
Drake’s first Billboard charting single was his official debut single “Best I Ever Had” from his mixtape/EP “So Far Gone.” The song went on to hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the video was directed by Kanye West.
On to The Weeknd! In the spring of 2011 Abel Tesfaye aka. The Weeknd dropped his iconic, genre defining mixtape “House Of Balloons” and by the summer it was already catching a Hollywood buzz. The first song to really take off was “High For This,” it was featured in the Entourage Season 8 teaser trailer.
Just about every song on The Weeknd’s “House Of Balloons” mixtape was amazing but his real debut single and the standout track that started receiving major radio airplay was “Wicked Games”
Last but not least is Justin Bieber! Arguably the biggest pop star in the world today. Bieber was a YouTube star at 12 years old with the user name “KidRauhl” doing various R&B covers.
Bieber went on to audition for Usher…
JB’s first radio single and video was for the track “One Time” and the rest is Canadian history…
